PJC> A great post by Tom Willis, a racing community veteran. Tom defines our community so very well. Please take a moment to read his words. The original post was made at www.race-Dezert.com and Tom has allowed Off-road.org to present his insight here.

OK, since Fish plugged RDC you can be sure that a lot more curious people are reading these threads. We should probably welcome them, since they've had the chance to snoop around and try to dig up dirt. Here's a tip: stop wasting your time stalking the race promoter. There is no story there. They live in a little house in a lower income neighborhood where tamale vendors and cars parked on the lawn are not unusual. No celebrities next door, no ocean view, and you might step on a horse turd on the sidewalk. There is no sleek corporate office with a helipad; they don't even own a new car. So much for the "heartless promoter making millions" angle. And they have followed or exceeded every BLM regulation since they started. You won't find a history of negligence in this series. If you studied their books you would come to the conclusion that there ain't no money to be made in a local grass-roots offroad series.

So why did they do it? Why roll the dice and risk losing what little they started with to work in the most stressful occupation around? A former race promoter actually died of a heart attack during a Barstow race. Ponder that for a minute.

Is there something in this life more important that chasing dollars? Yup, you just found it.

This hateful group of Eco- Fascists come out from under their rocks to prey upon the public's feelings. You knew they could not be far behind.

Lucerne Valley, Ca– The California 200 was not yet 24 hours old, the bodies of the tragic accident victims had not even obtained room temperature and the Environmental Wackos were trying to shut down Johnson Valley OHV Area.

The LA Times is reporting that Kieran Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity, is worried about off-road enthusiasts. Their newest trick is to say that the BLM does not have the resources to allow OHV activity.

Deadly crash stirs off-road racing debate – latimes.com
Environmental groups said they have long complained that the Bureau of Land Management, which issued permits for Saturday’s race, lacks the staff and ability to regulate off-road events that attract large crowds.“The feds have allowed a ‘Mad Max’ atmosphere to develop with too many people and too many machines crammed into too little space,” said Kieran Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity, a nonprofit environmental protection group that has had previous clashes with . The feds don’t have the resources, and apparently not the interest, to regulate off-road vehicles properly.”

Saturday’s crash was tragic but inevitable, Suckling said.
“You can’t put these huge crowds together with fast and powerful machines and not expect these kinds of accidents,” he said. “Our collective failure to rein in excessive off-road vehicle use is not only destroying the ecosystem but killing people. The federal government clearly does not have the manpower to sufficiently organize and regulate these events, and if you don’t have the manpower to do it safely, you shouldn’t be doing it at all.”
Many of us said right here, the Eco-Loons would use this as a way of closing off human access to Public Lands. ...

Two versions of the American dream now stand in sharp contrast. One views the money you earned as yours and best allocated by you. It champions the traditional American dream, which has played out millions of times through generations of Americans, of improving one’s lot in life and the entrepreneurial spirit of daring to dream and to build big. The other believes that the federal government, using taxpayers’ money, should play a major role in leveling out the nation’s wealth to guarantee outcomes to all, regardless of effort. How America chooses between these two views of the role of government, at this crucial juncture, will have everything to do with the future we and our children and our children’s children will enjoy.

President Barack Obama clearly believes in the larger government view. In his Inaugural Address, he said, “Now there are some who question the scale of our ambitions – who suggest our system cannot tolerate big plans…The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works—whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.” With a federal deficit of nearly one and a half trillion dollars for 2009 and deficit projections of not less than a half a trillion dollars over the next ten years, the question of whether government is too big or too small is very relevant, even vital to the future of the nation.

President Obama has specifically invited us as Recreationists to be involved in his America's Great Outdoor Initiative.

He has aksed us to join the conversation by VOTING for IDEAS submitted by the public. This is really EASY to do and only takes a few minutes. His Team will present the results to the President on 11/15/10.

Right now most of the folks voting are the vocal minority who seek to lock the public off public lands, so your VOTES are badly needed.

Below are some good ideas that deserve to be PROMOTED and in the box below that are ones that we think should be DEMOTED

RENO, NV JUNE 16, 2010 - Roger Norman and the Crystal Bay Casino team of Larry Roeseler and Eric Branstrom put all their effort into winning the 2010 Baja 500 and overcame 31 positions to finish 4th overall by only :33 seconds with a time of 9:34:54. The team was challenged with the usual brutal Baja terrain plus miles of dust and an incident with a motorcycle. “The accident with the Sportsman motorcycle rider in the dust has shook me to the core. I have been devastated and demoralized about off-road racing since Saturday's race,” commented Roger Norman in an email to his fellow Trophy Truck competitors. “We have all had our close calls and I can tell you that until you run someone over in the dust of another trophy truck at over 100 mph you will not understand the devastating feeling that is created even if they come out with non life threatening injuries.”

Roeseler and Branstrom started in the Crystal Bay Casino #8 truck and drove to race mile 198, overcoming about half of the field. Starting so far behind, they had two logjams to contend with including a truck stuck in a water crossing and a truck that had run into a ditch. “The first half of the race had a great pace even with the couple of delays and a flat tire. Larry handed me a solid truck around mid-pack,” said Norman.

Norman took over the driver seat with Branstrom continuing to co-drive and headed across Baja to the coast. “Our driver change was quick, and other than loosing the rear brakes which made the truck hard to control in the turns, we continued to click off positions towards the win,” said Norman.

The #8 trophy truck team had two incidents that cost them time. The first was a one-minute penalty, which on adjusted time took them out of third place. The second was a much more serious incident with a motorcycle rider at around race mile 225 on Mike’s Sky Ranch Road.

First time Baja competitor, Sportsman motorcycle rider Tim Nugent from Georgia, continued to race on course instead of pulling off and waiting for dust to clear after being passed by #35 Robbie Pierce’s trophy truck and didn’t realize that the #8 Roger Norman trophy truck was in the hunt to pass Pierce. ...

We managed to get the Jimco ready for Finke despite blowing a motor 2 weeks before the race .We got another motor from a junk yard in Sydney and had the car ready in time.

When we blew the motor we had only done 5 kilometres of testing so prologue (qualifying) for Finke was the first drive on dirt at race pace.

We qualified 40th out of 80 cars and were 8th in class.

Because we were down in qualifying we were in bad dust for the first 150 km and there were times we had to come to a complete stop it was that bad.We got past some slow cars once we got to rough part of the track as the Jimco was amazing in the reallly big stuff. We had a good run for the last 75 km and ended up 19 th into Finke on corrected time and 5th in class.

The overnight service stop in Finke was very easy .We checked everything but we could have just put fuel in it and raced back to Alice Springs.

We had an exceptional run on the way back with very little dust. The track is a lot worse on the way home because 500 bikes race on it once the cars get to Finke.

An epic and incredible day of racing as the DP Racing warriors overcame adversity and other Baja challenges to take 4th Place in Open Pro Class 22 in this weekend’s Tecate/SCORE Baja 500 off-road race. Congratulations to A.J. Stewart, Bryce Stavron, and Jesse Casillas for being the first non-factory team in their class and 10th Overall motorcycle. The Jimmy Lopez-prepped MotoWorld of El Cajon Honda CRF 450 X was flawless as the guys ripped around the Baja peninsula in a time of 10 hours 40 minutes.

A.J. was coming off a broken collarbone from the San Felipe 250 and this was Jesse’s first Baja race. The guys pre-ran smartly and took note of the considerable spring storm damage on the race course. Registration and technical inspection of the race bike was uneventful as the racers and our all-volunteer pit support prepared their game day faces.
